Why the UK's latest pledge to East Africa is so important
For the last five years, the rains have failed in East Africa. The region’s longest drought in over 40 years, entire communities continue to disband in search of food and water. The carcasses of livestock lay scattered for miles on end, once tended for by owners who now struggle to source basic provisions for themselves.
What happened at the G7 summit?
This past weekend, leaders of the G7, a group of the world’s advanced economies, met in Hiroshima, Japan for the 2023 summit. Invitations were also extended this year to several emerging economies from the Global South, as well as India and Australia.

The UK’s Minister of State for International Development, Andrew Mitchell, has announced the planned allocation of the 2023/24 Overseas Development Aid (ODA) budget. This amounts to £8.1bn for the coming year, an increase on last year but with significant reductions to most budget lines.
